We believe diversity is the key to develop a highly skilled athlete. With safety at the forefront, we teach whitewater kayaking skill training with the help of the fastest growing paddling discipline: kayak polo.
Whitewater kayaking lessons are focused around the freestyle discipline. In the summer, we visit local areas with a standing wave, where surfing, spinning and different rolling tricks can be learned and practiced. In the winter, we play kayak polo.
Gated slalom practices are not yet an option in the Sudbury area, however the club has had decent results in competitions in the past based on the high-level boat control skills developed through kayak polo and freestyle training.
Instructions, boats, paddles, spray skirts and helmets with face guards are all provided by the club.
All practices are coached, and white water activities are dependent on river conditions.
Currently the Commodore of the SCC, Gergely joined the SCC in 2002 with a vision to re-establish sprint racing and competitive paddling disciplines in Sudbury. As a competitive athlete in Hungary, he trained in Gyor - one of the finest canoeing training facilities and host of World Championships. He has been publicly recognized for his contribution to the Northern Water Sports Centre by receiving the ‘40 under 40’ award in 2008.
Joined SCC in 2017 as a Laurentian student looking to get the community of Sudbury more involved in paddling. Easton spends his summers working in Ottawa as a whitewater rafting guide for OWL rafting, and can be seen in the various whitewater around Sudbury during other times of the year. Easton hopes that the canoe club be an epicenter for the whitewater community.
